Vacuum Cleaner

I recommend you to use a carpet vacuum cleaner. If you don't have one, just make sure that it will not ruin the gentle fibers of your carpet.

Baking Soda

For more results, I recommend you to use fresh baking soda. To be clear: you should not use baking soda that has been openly lying around, in the refrigerator or even leftover baking soda in a sealed container.

Dry Scrub Brush

You will use this brush to clean your carpet before using baking soda. This is why I recommend you to use a brush that doesn't have tough bristles. In the event that you use one with such tough bristles, this might damage the carpet.

Old Sock or T-Shirt

You can use these 2 materials to blot the excess moisture from your carpet. If your carpet texture is full and fluffy, they will be of great help.

Carpet Shampoo

Make sure to use a carpet cleaner such as shampoo that is specifically made to be used on carpets. This will ensure that the integrity of the carpet is preserved and that the carpet stains will be completely dealt with.

White Vinegar

Vinegar is very efficient in dealing with tough carpet stains because the components in vinegar help to break down the acids in stains. In the process, it makes it easier to lift or even completely remove the stain.

Combining vinegar with baking soda makes it even more efficient. And the result is gentle enough to not ruin your carpet.

Water

I suggest you use room temperature water instead of hot water, this way it will not react to the carpet cleaning solution.
In addition, using room temperature water will not shock the fibers of the carpet.

Essential Oils

You cannot use essential oils ⁽¹⁾ to remove pet or stain odors, but you can use them to deodorize and sanitize your carpet.

For instance, you can mix them with carpet shampoo or with baking soda.

To clean your carpet, I recommend you to use :

lemongrass,
eucalyptus,
cedar,
lavender,
sandalwood,
rose
green tea.

Whisk

Whisk is totally optional. But it can be really helpful to make your own dry or wet solution. The use of a tool (instead of your hands) is more sanitary and it also acts as a protection for your hands to prevent allergies

Now, I will reveal to you my first simple method. This method is a direct treatment with baking soda.

Method 1: Direct Treatment With Baking Soda

1.Prepare Your Carpet

First off, you have to vacuum your carpet. The goal is to get rid of other loose particles and dirt that might make your carpet muddy when treated with a wet solution.

You really do not have to remove everything, you just need to do a quick clean so that the dirt on the surface can be dealt with.

2.Baking Soda Treatment

Now, sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda directly on the carpet stain. Make sure that you are completely covering the stain and you distribute it evenly.

Then take a brush to work it into the deepest fibers of the carpet. Remember to work it in gently so that the carpet will not get ruined.

If you have a carpet with a fuller texture, you can opt for or using an old sock or t-shirt.

When doing this, the baking soda might clump, so massage everything evenly. Let the baking soda sit there overnight to have results.

3.Remove The Baking Soda

Last but not least, vacuum your carpet to get all of the baking soda off.

Remember to work in sections so that there will be no leftover product. Once there is no visible baking soda left, you can then do another round of the vacuum to completely clean your carpet.

Now, your stain is gone…. but you still have this smell.

Method 2: Dealing With Tough Smells

1.Use Carpet Shampoo

Before doing the baking soda treatment, wash the stained area with carpet shampoo.

If you do not have one, you can use my carpet cleaner recipe. After doing so, wait for the carpet to completely dry before applying the baking soda treatment. Once the bubbling has settled, take your paper towel and blot that area to absorb moisture(2). Notice that the stain will be lightened. Just keep on repeating on pouring the hydrogen peroxide and blotting it afterward until the area is completely lightened.

2.Baking Soda Treatment

Then, mix baking soda with a whisk, making sure that there are no clumps. Put a liberal amount directly on the stain and let it sit there for 24 hours. In order to mask the smell, you can also mix at least 10 drops of your chosen essential oil into the baking soda mixture.

3.Remove The Baking Soda

Now, you can vacuum your carpet again to remove the baking soda. If there is still some smell left, just apply vinegar and baking soda treatment. You can also add essential oils. Apply this treatment until you eradicate the smell.

More Tips And Tricks

The longer the baking soda is left on a carpet stain, the more effective it is in removing the stain.
You can also add essential oils to the white vinegar solution to get rid of odors.
Make sure to let the carpet completely dryso that there will be no moisture and vinegar left on the carpet that might ruin it.
If you use white vinegar, always blot in between treatments to get rid of trapped moisture from the vinegar solution.
